Online Writing Jobs: Making A Living Ghost Writing For Other People
A lot of people dream about the idea of online writing jobs but don’t get any further than dreaming. Which is just plain daft as there is a lot of demand for writing jobs online if you know where to look.
What’s different about Online Writing Jobs?
The thing I found out about online writing was that the style is completely different from the one I used at school all those years ago.
The audience has a short attention span, so short chatty sentences work better than long complicated ones.
And a lot of the jobs didn’t actually require me to have much – if any – knowledge of what I wrote about. Which sounds bad but it’s really quite easy to research web writing projects and if you’ve only got a few hundred words to write (which is usually the case) then it takes less and less time.
When I first started web content writing, it would take me ages to finish an article. After I’d got a few articles under my belt, things began to get quicker and I can now knock out a decent quality article that gets accepted first time in a handful of minutes. Which then turns into dollars in my pocket – a very nice feeling!
The snappier your online writing, the better.
If you’re going for online writing jobs then you’ll be writing for other people. This is different from writing for your own blog: you need to keep your personality out of your writing. Whereas writing for your own blog (like I’m doing here) gives you free reign to bring your own style into your internet writing.
Check out the main article sites such as EzineArticles and ArticlesBase. You’ll see how people manage to write a few hundred words on a subject that they know very little (if anything) about. If this style of writing is one that you can duplicate then there’s a good chance that you’ll find plenty of well paid online writing jobs on the “traditional” freelance writing sites such as Elance, Vworker, Odesk, etc.
Don’t rule out getting online writing jobs on sites like Fiverr either. This modern interloper has scooped up a fair few writers. Quality and quantity varies but as a general rule if you’re based in the Western world and English is your first language then you’ll be able to pitch for online writing jobs of about 400 – 500 words and one article for the $5 fee. The site takes a hefty 20% commission ($1) but once you’ve completed a few online writing jobs you’ll be able to contact the people you’ve written for and pitch your services direct.
400 to 500 words may sound a lot but once you get in the swing of things you’ll be able to write that quantity in around ten to fifteen minutes, less if you use programs such as Dragon Naturally Speaking or the built in speech to text facility in the newer versions of Windows or Macs. Speaking your articles will likely cut down the time to “write” and edit them to a handful of minutes. This technique will make your online writing jobs nicely profitable even if you’re not getting top dollar for them.
